EKICART® is a powder for maintaining healthy joints and to support flexible movement in horses and ponies. Ekicart® is also used to meet the increased need for nutrients of the musculoskeletal system at high load and in the growth phase.
The objective of the dietary supplement EKICART® is the preservation of articular cartilage in horses and ponies.
Tests on humans show that various biomarkers used as measures of chronic inflammation, autoimmune reaction and collagen degeneration decline spectacularly.
EKICART® is a nutraceutical for horses and ponies with all of the building blocks for the maintenance of the joint cartilage in a ready-to-use form.
The articular cartilage is composed of chondrocytes and an extracellular matrix of collagen fibres intertwined with proteoglycans. The joint cartilage has no blood vessels, lymphatic vessels or nerves. The nourishment of the cartilage occurs via diffusion from the joint fluid. In growing animals only, additional nourishment is provided by transudate from the subchondral blood vessels. For this, there must be a supply of free amino acids and glucosamine as basic building blocks.
During the convalescence period, collagen must be synthesized anew by the chondrocytes. Collagen is a structural protein. It makes up a third of the mass of bone tissue and half of the dry weight of cartilage. Collagen is synthesized in the cell from amino acids. During protein synthesis, the formation of the correct amino acid sequence is determined by the genetic code in the DNA. All amino acids must be present at the site of synthesis at the same time. If any one of the amino acids is missing, then the protein synthesis cannot occur. EKICART® contains all the amino acids needed in order to build up the collagen fibres.
Glucosamine is a precursor to glycosaminoglycans (chondroitine sulfate and hyaluronic acid), an important component of the joint fluid and the cartilage matrix. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are bound to a core protein to form proteoglycans. Proteoglycans bind water molecules, which results in strength and shock absorption. The viscosity of the joint fluid is primarily dependent on the concentration of hyaluronic acid. Glucosamine is a small molecule which can easily pass through the membranes of the capillaries to arrive in the joint fluid. EKICART® contains high concentrations of glucosamine sulfate.
The chondrocytes are exposed by free radicals to intense oxidative stress, so that production of extracellular matrix is made more difficult. The powerful natural antioxidants bitter melon extract, glutathione, pomegranate extract and curcumin in EKICART® calm the chondrocytes down.
EKICART® contains prebiotics for a balanced intestinal flora. Prebiotics are resistant to digestion in the small intestine and are gradually fermented by the microflora of the large intestine, thereby stimulating the growth of benign bacteria as a selective substrate. To guarantee the delicious taste, apple aroma has been added.
Specific vitamins, minerals and spore elements that have been added in scientifically researched amounts ensure the effectiveness of EKICART®. Vitamins A, E, B6 and C, zinc, manganese and selenium have an anti-oxidant effect and support the immune system. Vitamin B6 is vital for the creation of connections and bridges (cross-links) between the collagen fibers. Vitamin C and copper are needed for the synthesis of collagen. Zinc is essential for cell renewal. Manganese is of essential importance as a cofactor for the polymerisation of glucosamine.
EKICART® contains undenatured type II collagen in low doses, allowing to interact with the immune system. When cartilage is damaged, fragments (foreign to the body) are released into the synovial fluid. The immune system responds (immune response) with an inflammatory reaction in which antibodies against type II collagen are formed. Supplementation of undenatured type II collagen in low doses (milligrammes) desensitises the immune system so that further degeneration of the collagen fibres is prevented. When taken orally, specific parts (epitopes) of the intact helix structure are recognised by the immune system near the Peyer's patch in the last part of the small intestinal wall (ileum). After contact between undenatured type II collagen and the Peyer's patch, regulatory T-cells (Tregs) in the intestinal mucosa suppress the defence mechanism. The specifically formed regulatory T-cells migrate to the joint and reduce the inflammatory response. This working mechanism is called oral tolerance.

Once per day in the evening via the feed for a period of three months, the number of measuring scoops according to body weight, for the support of the body's own repair processes. Moisten the feed if necessary.
